The Perks

Four Seasons Preferred Partner benefits at Four Seasons Kyoto

The program benefits are the same at every hotel. What changes is what they are worth. This is how each one works at this property.

01

Breakfast for two at EMBA KYOTO GRILL

Full breakfast for two per bedroom, served from 7:00 to 10:30 am at EMBA KYOTO GRILL, where breakfast is reserved for in-house guests and the windows face Shakusui-en, or through in-room dining from 6:30 am. The in-room menu includes a Kyoto-style Japanese breakfast with Kyotamba Koshihikari rice, black soybean miso soup and obanzai side dishes. Room-only rates at Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto do not include breakfast, so this is the benefit worth most over a stay.

02

$100 hotel credit, $200 in suites

One credit per stay, to spend on food and drink or at The Spa. In Kyoto, USD 100 covers roughly the seasonal afternoon tea for two at EMBA KYOTO GRILL, which costs about $45 a person on weekdays. The suite-level $200 goes a long way towards a private tea ceremony at Shakusui-tei, about $200 for two.

03

Upgrade priority

A one-category upgrade when available at check-in. The Heritage Garden categories face Shakusui-en, the hotel's pond garden, so a move onto the garden side is the upgrade that changes the stay most. We note your preference for the garden side on the booking.

04

Early check-in and late checkout

Priority for both. Check-in at Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto is at 3:00 pm and checkout at noon. Travellers arriving on the morning Shinkansen from Tokyo often reach the hotel before lunch, so we ask for the room to be ready on arrival. If it is not, the hotel holds bags and opens the fitness centre for a shower.

05

VIP recognition

A welcome amenity and a VIP note on the reservation. We pass on whether you want a garden view, a twin or king bed and any celebration, and we can ask the concierge to hold a tea ceremony slot, which needs 14 days' notice.

06

Combines with Four Seasons offers

Preferred Partner benefits sit on top of the hotel's own offers. In autumn 2026 these include Rediscover Kyoto, with a complimentary third night, and Experience More, which adds a spending credit. We check which offer gives the lowest total for your dates when we quote.

Advisor Picks

Best rooms to book at Four Seasons Kyoto

Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto opened in 2016 and has 180 rooms and suites, including 57 Residential Suites with kitchens. The low-rise building wraps around Shakusui-en, an 800-year-old pond garden at the foot of the Higashiyama hills. Rooms look over the garden, an inner courtyard or the city, and the view, not the size, is what separates most categories.

Best value

Deluxe Room

The Deluxe Room is 49 to 53 sq m (527 to 570 sq ft) with a king bed or two doubles, washi-paper lamps, fusuma screens and a marble bathroom. King rooms add a sofabed. It is one of three categories that accept dogs and cats.

More space

Premier Room

The Premier Room is 53 to 61 sq m (570 to 656 sq ft), and sleeps three adults or two adults and two children. It suits families who want a little more floor space without paying for a garden view.

The room to book

Premier Heritage Garden Room

The Premier Heritage Garden Room is 52 to 53 sq m (560 to 570 sq ft) and looks over Shakusui-en. Garden-facing rooms are the ones reviewers single out, and in cherry blossom and autumn leaf season they sell first.

Balcony over the pond

Four Seasons Heritage Garden Room

On the fourth floor, the Four Seasons Heritage Garden Room is 53 sq m (570 sq ft) with a 6 sq m (64 sq ft) balcony facing the pond garden and the hills behind it. The bathroom has a separate shower and tub.

Longer stays

One-Bedroom Residence and One-Bedroom Heritage Garden Residence

The One-Bedroom Residence is 83 sq m (893 sq ft) and the Heritage Garden version 104 to 107 sq m (1,120 to 1,150 sq ft), each with a full kitchen and a washer. Residential Suites come with welcome champagne, a dedicated Guest Experience Ambassador, a complimentary return transfer from Kyoto Station and complimentary overnight valet parking.

Families and groups

Two-Bedroom Residences

Three two-bedroom layouts: the Two-Bedroom Tatami Residence at 130 sq m (1,400 sq ft) with a king-sized futon, the Two-Bedroom Heritage Garden Residence at 150 sq m (1,615 sq ft) with a balcony over the pond, and the Two-Bedroom Kyoto Residence at 160 to 180 sq m (1,722 to 1,937 sq ft). The larger two sleep five.

Kyoto's largest hotel suite

Two-Bedroom Presidential Suite

The fourth-floor Two-Bedroom Presidential Suite is 245 sq m (2,637 sq ft) with a 10 sq m (107 sq ft) balcony, a living and dining room and a private pantry. The hotel describes it as the largest hotel suite in Kyoto.

Children under 18 stay free when they share existing beds, and a third adult pays an extra-bed charge. Rollaways fit children aged 12 and under. Connecting rooms are available in the Deluxe, Premier, both Heritage Garden room categories and the Presidential Suite. The hotel is non-smoking, and smoking in a room is charged as an extra night.

Before You Go

Advisor tips for Four Seasons Kyoto

01

Hotel room or Residential Suite

About a third of the inventory at Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto is Residential Suites, apartment-style units with kitchens and washers that are booked like any other room. They share the hotel's restaurants, spa and garden but have their own entrance on Higashioji Street. For families and stays of four nights or more, the kitchen and laundry make a real difference. The separate Private Residences are owned homes, not part of the hotel inventory.

02

Budget for the service charge and Kyoto's new lodging tax

The hotel adds a 15 percent service charge, and Japan's 10 percent consumption tax applies on top. Kyoto raised its accommodation tax on 1 March 2026, and it is now charged per person per night on a sliding scale. At this hotel most room rates fall in the JPY 4,000 band, about $27 per person per night, and stays costing JPY 100,000 or more per person per night, such as suites and peak dates, pay JPY 10,000, about $65 per person per night. The tax is collected at check-in. We give you the full total with your quote.

03

Book the tea ceremony and the sushi counter early

The private tea ceremony at Shakusui-tei, the tea room beside FUJU, is for in-house guests only, runs from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm and needs 14 days' notice. Sushi Ginza Onodera has 10 counter seats and three dinner seatings, and charges in full for cancellations within seven days. Give us your dates and we will request both.

04

Catch the maiko in the lobby

A maiko, an apprentice geisha, gives a free 10-minute dance in the lobby at 5:15 pm every Tuesday and Saturday, followed by photos and a meet-and-greet at EMBA KYOTO GRILL, SEY and FUJU. Plan an early dinner in the hotel on one of those evenings.

05

Know the morning road closure

Onna-zaka, the slope up to the main entrance from the Higashiyama Shichijo crossing, is closed to cars from 8:00 to 9:00 am except on Sundays and public holidays. Cars use the Hotel Residences entrance on Higashioji Street during that hour, so tell the front desk if a taxi or transfer is booked then.

06

Stay in for autumn terrace dinners

From 21 September to 30 November, EMBA KYOTO GRILL charges outside diners a fee for terrace tables over the pond, about $40 for a premium garden table. Hotel guests do not pay it, which makes the terrace one of the easier autumn dinner bookings in Higashiyama.

07

Splitting a trip with Tokyo and Osaka

Four Seasons has two hotels in Tokyo, at Otemachi and at Marunouchi, and Four Seasons Hotel Osaka, which opened in 2024. Together they form the Japan Collection, and Four Seasons offers platform-to-platform Shinkansen service between them. Ask us to arrange it when you book more than one city.

Where the Credit Goes

Dining at Four Seasons Kyoto

Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto has two restaurants, a bar and a tea house lounge, all looking onto Shakusui-en, plus in-room dining around the clock.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner and afternoon tea

EMBA KYOTO GRILL

EMBA KYOTO GRILL is a 178-seat charcoal grill designed by Kokai Studios, with 106 seats inside facing the pond and 72 on the terrace. The menu runs from dry-aged American ribeye to Kagoshima black wagyu sirloin and Japanese T-bone. Breakfast, for hotel guests only, is from 7:00 to 10:30 am, lunch from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm and dinner from 5:30 to 10:00 pm. The autumn afternoon tea costs about $45 a person on weekdays.

Edomae sushi omakase

Sushi Ginza Onodera

Sushi Ginza Onodera serves Edo-style omakase at a 10-seat counter of 400-year-old Japanese cypress, designed by STRICKLAND, with two private dining rooms. Executive Chef Takuya Kubo leads the kitchen, with fish from Toyosu Market and Hokkaido. Seatings are at 5:30, 6:00 and 8:30 pm. Children aged 8 and over may sit at the counter, and families with younger children book a private room.

Tea house lounge

FUJU

FUJU sits across a glass bridge in the pond garden, in a sukiya-style tea house built mostly from Kyoto cypress. Matcha and Kyoto sweets are served by day, Kyoto sake and champagne towards evening, from 2:00 to 7:00 pm. The tea ceremony room Shakusui-tei is next door.

Cocktail bar

SEY

SEY is the lobby-level bar, inspired by the izakaya, with cocktails built on Japanese spirits and Japanese whiskies. It is open from 3:00 pm to midnight, with live music on Thursday evenings. The wagyu katsu sandwich is the bar snack to order.

On Property

Garden, spa and pool at Four Seasons Kyoto

Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto is built around its garden, and most of what guests remember happens there or on the B2 level, where the pool, gym and spa sit. Day visitors pay about $120 for a three-hour pass to the pool, gym, sauna and baths.

01

Shakusui-en pond garden

Shakusui-en is a 10,000 sq m (about 100,000 sq ft) circuit-style pond garden thought to date from the late Heian period, when it belonged to the villa of Taira no Shigemori. It was reworked around 1700, and the hotel restored its waterfall using the garden scholar Mirei Shigemori's 1930s survey. A glass bridge protects the original stone bridge between the large and small ponds. Children can feed the carp.

02

Indoor pool

The 20-metre (65-foot) indoor pool has two large whirlpools, underwater loungers and chaise longues on the deck, with an ofuro and sauna alongside. It is open from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm, with adults-only hours in the morning and evening.

03

The Spa

The Spa has seven treatment rooms, including two couples' suites with private baths. Treatments start with a foot bath of roasted Uji green tea and a Tamba sea salt scrub, and the menu includes sake baths. The autumn ritual costs about $280 for 90 minutes. The Spa opens from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm, and Vogue named it among the 100 best spas in the world in 2025.

04

Fitness centre

The gym is open 24 hours, with a minimum age of 12. Complimentary wellness activities run every Sunday, and the concierge arranges private yoga by the pond, forest bathing hikes and bicycles to ride along the Kamo River.

05

Children's playroom

A playroom on the B2 floor for children aged 3 to 8 is open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, with a parent present. Cots, bed rails and bottle sterilisers are free, nannies can be booked for a fee, and Residential Suites can add a children's indoor tent.

Timing

When to visit Four Seasons Kyoto

Kyoto's seasons set both the price and the view from a garden room. Shakusui-en is planted for cherry blossom and maple, and those weeks sell out first.

Late March to mid-April
Cherry blossom season, the busiest and most expensive weeks of the year in Kyoto. The garden's cherries are visible from garden-facing rooms. Book six months or more ahead.
May and June
Fresh green maples and settled weather in May, then the rainy season from early June. June brings lower rates and the best chance of an upgrade to a garden room.
July to September
Kyoto summers are hot and humid, and the Gion Matsuri festival fills July. The indoor pool and FUJU's shaded terrace earn their keep, and rates ease in late summer.
Mid-November to early December
Autumn leaves turn in the garden and at nearby Kiyomizu-dera and Tofuku-ji. This is the second peak of the year, when EMBA KYOTO GRILL's terrace is in demand. Winter after that is cold, quiet and the best value.
